What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. The word “chiropractic” comes from the Greek words of cheir (meaning “hand”) and praktos (meaning “done”), which interpret to: done by hand. Manual healing methods such as chiropractic can be traced back to ancient times. Chiropractic services offered in our office are used most often to address common neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to neck pain, back pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.
What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
One of the most common and well known therapeutic procedures performed by doctors of chiropractic is a chiropractic adjustment, also referred to as a chiropractic manipulative therapy. The purpose of chiropractic adjustment is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile - or restricted in their movement - as a result of tissue injury, postural imbalances, or degenerative changes. A common chiropractic term applied to joint dysfunction is referred to as a joint subluxation.
Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as a car crash, improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In any case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for an individual.
At Zenflex™, we offer personalized chiropractic adjustments through a variety of techniques based upon each patient's condition. Diversified, Arthrostim and Activator Methods, Gonstead, and Drop Table Techniques.
The Purpose of Chiropractic Spinal Adjustment
The human spine consists of a complex arrangement of bones referred to as vertebrae, discs, joints, and the muscle groups that allow the spine to twist, turn, and bend. It also hosts the spinal cord, with major nerves running through the vertebral spaces to serve the rest of the body. Unfortunately, many problems can afflict this delicate combination of moving and non-moving parts. Even the smallest subluxation, or joint imbalance, can limit joint motion, causing neck or back discomfort. Dislodged or herniated discs can press against nerve roots, producing neurological discomfort or weakness in the extremities while also affecting your systemic health. An unbalanced spine may throw the rest of your body out of balance, leaving you with chronic aches and pains.
Chiropractic adjustments to the spinal column, or any other joint segment, can ease discomfort, enhance joint motion, improve your posture, and help your nervous system function normally.
Chiropractic adjustments targeted at the affected joints and tissues aid in the restoration of joint mobility thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, allowing tissues to heal. Compared to other common treatments for pain, such as over-the-counter and prescription pain medications, chiropractic's conservative approach offers a safe and effective option.
While chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following an adjustment, similar as with some forms of exercise or strenuous activities, that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours.
Physiotherapy Modalities
Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical muscle stimulation is a machine used to promote muscle relaxation and pain relief. A typical EMS session lasts between 10 and 20 minutes. As the intensity of the EMS increases, muscle contraction increases which encourages the body to release its own pain-controlling substances called endorphins and enkephalins.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is used for deep tissue heating and its effects at the body's cellular level. During a typical treatment these beneficial effects are not noticeable. It becomes noticeable after treatment has occurred due to the increased rate of tissue repair and pain reduction.
Intersegmental Traction
Traction is an excellent modality when injuries such as compression or repetitive stress occur. By gently expanded the joint space or spaces, traction has the ability to promote an increase in joint motion, restore curvature in the spine, reduce discomfort, and facilitate the healing process. Traction can be applied to practically every joint in the human body - from the neck all the way down to the little toe.
Cryotherapy
Ice is an important therapy used during the initial acute phase of care and one that can be applied at home for up to 20 minutes. Ice reduces inflammation and pain.
